Accessibility at the Festival

Relaxed performance etiquette is in place – House lights will be kept up to allow audience ease to come and go, stim, ask a friend a question quietly, use assistive communication devices, fidget or stand. A preamble is often provided to explain parts of the show that may trigger, upset, or that people with sensitivities may wish to opt out of. Technical elements are designed to center sensory sensitivities such as: limited to no glitching lights, dampened lighting contrast and dampened sound in volume and frequency, little bass, and houselights on throughout the performance. Sensory kits or other devices may still be recommended for individual needs. 

The rest of relaxed performance etiquette (as noted above) is provided, allowing the audience to come and go, stim, etc. Technical elements are not altered which means there may be glitchy sound and light, loud sounds, darkness or saturated lights. A preamble is provided regarding sensory rich or uncomfortable scenes or changes so that the audience may decide to use sensory kits or opt out of those particular scenes. 

Nonverbal parts of the show are described for the blind/low vision audience through receiver equipment. Receiver equipment will be available at the venue 15 min before the performance. Receiver equipment courtesy of Citadel Theatre. Audio describer will be noted where possible 

Written words are broadcast for audiences to read alongside what performers are saying. Open captioning means it is available for everyone, often projected onto a screen or a TV.  

Translation from spoken language and music to sign language for Deaf audiences. Deaf interpretation (DI) is done by Deaf interpretation Artists. Interpreters and style will be communicated when possible. American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation states certified hearing interpreters will be translating the performance.

All 2026 Festival show listings include plain-language descriptions on our ticketing website to help audiences make informed and confident choices. What does plain language mean? Plain language is geared toward literal descriptions, shorter words and sentences. Plain language descriptions describe what is occurring in the performance so that audience can understand and make informed decisions. It can also help to bridge cultural gaps, understanding not everyone comes from the same cultural backgrounds, knowledge and stories (i.e. not everyone has read Shakespeare!). 

Each year, we conduct and update accessibility audits of indoor Festival venues to identify, understand, and, where possible, address barriers to physical access and environmental sensory concerns. Most venues offer wheelchair stalls (tickets for wheelchair users) as well as seating options (ie, seats without arms). All venues offer “pre boarding,” allowing audience with access needs or seating and/or parking needs due to mobility aids to go to the front of the line. Patron Services is pleased to assist and inform venues of patron needs.

This captioning service provides real-time subtitles of dialogue and sound cues during live theatre performances, ensuring Deaf and hard-of-hearing Audiences, as well as those who benefit from text-based access, can engage with the performances.
