Have You Met... Tyrena Millar?

[June 11, 2024]

Tyrena Millar (she/her) is one of our full-time resident Technicians at Fringe Theatre.

Being a resident tech means being an expert-of-all trades, and every day looks a little bit different. Animal lover, northern light chaser, and Fringer since she was nine years old – meet Tyrena!

When did you start fringing?

The first Festival I ever attended was when I was nine years old. Every summer after that, I would ask my brother when he would next take me to Fringe.

How would you describe your job at Fringe?

My job involves a variety of tasks. I help maintain our three theatre spaces, various studios, and storage spaces. I lead our crew of Technicians to set up spaces for events. You can also find me programming lights for our many clients.

What most excites you about your role with Fringe?

Getting to work alongside independent productions and assisting a show come to life over a week. It’s such a fun and fulfilling experience for me! Each show brings its own unique set of challenges, which pushes me to learn and grow. I think of it as helping to bring all our Clients’ dreams to life. We work with many creators and various event types, which keeps the job fun and interesting.

If you could invite anyone, living or dead, to Fringe with you, who would that be and why?

I wish I could have brought my mom to the Fringe Festival. I am unsure if she ever went with my older siblings. I would have loved to show her around the site and take her to some shows. She was an Artist, so I know she would have loved it all.

What is something you’re learning about right now?

I learned how to do my own taxes this year! But truly, in this line of work, I feel like I learn something new every day.

Who or what inspires you?

My two supervisors inspire me. Selina (Fringe’s Technical Director) is so passionate about serving independent Artists; she goes above and beyond and is so kind to everyone she meets. Chris (our Operations Director) also inspires me because he is the kind of person who can make friends with anyone, and he always has a funny anecdote to share.

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

I have curly hair that usually hides in a bun or ponytail. But whenever I do have it down, people love to compliment it. I also love it when I get compliments for how I realize a Designer’s lighting plot for a show.

What is an achievement you’re most proud of?

I got to work on the paint and carpentry crew for The Last of Us. It was the coolest and largest production I have ever worked on. I am also super proud of myself for getting a full-time job with Fringe Theatre.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

I am super passionate about animals, sewing, and my friends and family. I also am an avid northern light chaser!

If joy became a national currency, what kind of work would make you wealthy?

Rescuing animals and helping them find their forever homes. I’ve fostered puppies five times, and it brings me so much joy!
