Overview:
The Senior HR Manager will be responsible for guiding and managing the overall provision of Human Resources services, policies, and programs for Fringe Theatre by overseeing the daily operations, policy administration, and the humanness of Fringe staff. In collaboration with Fringe’s Executive leadership and Board, the Senior HR Manager will ensure the implementation of Human Resources (HR) strategies, programs, and initiatives are strategically aligned with Fringe’s goals. This is a new position within Fringe Theatre’s administrative operations, and we’re excited to welcome in someone enthusiastic who wants to nurture a people-first culture that supports the evolving, creative work of our staff, volunteers, and artists.

Job description:  

The Senior HR Manager is responsible for: 

  • Building, managing, and facilitating all HR operations including but not limited to, payroll, benefits administration, compensation and total rewards, employee relations, performance and/or disciplinary issues, terminations, training and development, and policy and handbook reviews and updates;  
  • Supporting the development of a Human Resources Strategy, and creating, executing, and managing programs and policies in relation to that strategy;
  • Coaching and supporting various levels of management from Executives to front-line managers on employee-related matters including evaluation, training, discipline, termination, and other HR issues; 
  • Managing and facilitating the full-cycle recruitment process including the onboarding of new staff members;  
  • Analyzing trends and metrics to develop solutions;  
  • Keeping current with existing and proposed laws and regulations affecting HR practices; 
  • Maintaining personnel files and records of employment, as well as case management regarding leaves of absence, disability management, Work Safe, benefits, parental leaves etc.; 
  • Managing HR  services, policies, and employee benefits; 
  • Developing staffing budgets and strategies for sustainable operations; 
  • Developing educational and training plans and programs to promote diversity, inclusion, and collaboration among employees and set diversity and inclusion goals and objectives; 
  • Developing and implementing programs and events to foster good company morale and employee satisfaction;  
  • Collaborating with the Programming Department to support the onboarding of contracted artistic workers;  
  • Participating in various committees (ex. Joint Health & Safety Committee, Safer Spaces Committee etc.); 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years of progressive Human Resources experience combined with post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Resources or a related field; 
  • CPHR Designation or candidacy considered an asset; 
  • Basic accounting knowledge and/or Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation considered an asset;  
  • Knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Office and Quickbooks; 
  • Experience in developing and implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives and training plans along with influencing positive change in the field of equity, diversity, and inclusion; 
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills, both written and verbal; 
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task; 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Exceptional leadership skills; 
  • Phenomenal attention to detail; 
  • Willingness to give and receive constructive feedback; and 
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, creative environment that responds to the evolving and innovative needs of a leading theatre arts company. 

This position is responsible to Fringe Theatre’s Executive Director, Finance Director, and Board of Directors, and works cross-functionally with all departments, as well as vendors, granters, sponsors, donors, and other stakeholders important to the health of Fringe Theatre. It is expected that this role will enthusiastically champion Fringe Theatre’s commitment to radical hospitality for all fringers. 

This is a full-time, permanent position. While this position is a Monday-Friday position within the organization, it is reasonably expected the Senior HR Manager be available and on-call for the lead up, execution, and reconciliation of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival every summer.

Our base of operations is the Fringe Theatre Arts Barns in Edmonton, AB (10330 84 Avenue). Our hours of business are typically 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday, though as a busy cultural space supporting more than 500 events year-round and as the producers of the largest, longest running Fringe Theatre Festival in North America, there is an expectation that staff are reasonably available evenings and weekends based on season and Festival event activity.
