Adventures in Family Theatre

Message From The Program Director

Thomas ScottTheatre for young audiences is steeped in the mythology of Fringe Theatre Adventures. In our 30-year history, family theatre has been at the kernel of what we do and who we are. This year's family adventure is no exception, and music is the common, magic thread which ties each of our fantastic presentations together.

Of course you know us best for our International Fringe Theatre Festival and KidsFringe, 11 days of zany performances and family fun in the heart of Old Strathcona. We hope you'll also join us for our Adventures in Family Theatre; a season with us is a great way to travel to worlds beyond our own, as well as deep into our own community. Experience the adventure that is Fringe Theatre.

Enjoy!

Adventures in Fringe Theatre

Message From The Program Director

Thomas ScottI love our company name, Fringe Theatre Adventures. This great, big umbrella encapsulates everything the company represents: a world-class theatre festival, a prominent, performing arts facility and an adventurous theatre season. Being on the Fringe and in the spirit of adventure this season, we're thrilled to present you with some of the world's best in mainstage theatre.

You likely already know (and love) our International Fringe Theatre Festival (aka The Fringe), so why not continue the Fringe Theatre experience with our season presentations? Whether you bring friends, your main squeeze or fly solo, this season's shows are a great night out. We look forward to seeing you under our umbrella.

Enjoy!

An Evening with Uncle ValAn Evening with Uncle Val

March 3 – 13, 2011

Written by Andy Jones & Michael Jones, Sr.
Performed by Andy Jones | Directed by Lois Brown

Westbury Theatre
TransAlta Arts Barns
10330 – 83 Avenue

The year is 1987. An indignant, 70-year-old retired fisherman displaced from his outport home, Uncle Val is now trapped in the ‘big city' of St. John's. Homesick, Val struggles to figure out what life has left to offer him.

The hilariously sarcastic Uncle Val muses on Christmas reminiscences, encounters with the Beatles, and the danger of St. John's winters. As he struggles to find his place in ‘city' life, he encounters birth, death and romance; deals with the ongoing drama of his obnoxious son-in-law's pub; and experiences life as a devilish live-in babysitter for his grandchildren, Jimmy and Kimmy.
